Our Judge - Barbara Jaenicke

Barbara’s painting journey began in her teen years with a love of drawing. Not realizing that a career in fine art could be a possibility, she steered her initial career choice toward Advertising/Graphic Design, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 from The College of New Jersey. After careers in advertising and marketing, she was able to turn her focus to fine art in 2002, pursuing it full steam ahead.

Working in oil and pastel, Barbara strives to capture light-filled landscapes in a painterly, impressionist style. She holds signature memberships in Oil Painters of America (OPA) and American Impressionist Society (AIS), and has earned the distinctions of Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and Eminent Pastelist in the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS).

Although Barbara’s finished work typically is created in the studio, a regular practice of plein air painting in all seasons has greatly enhanced her ability to capture the genuine effects of the landscape in her paintings. Back in the studio, when she can slow down from chasing the light, she spends quite a bit of time planning out compositions that will best feature the visual concepts for each studio painting. Her studio work is a culmination of field studies, along with notes and reference photos collected in the field.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Barbara also lived in Atlanta, Georgia for many years until she yearned for snow and mountains for her landscape subject matter, which prompted her family’s move to Bend, Oregon in 2015.

Barbara is also a popular workshop instructor throughout the US, teaching workshops coast to coast each year. To learn more about Barbara and view her work, visit www.barbarajaenicke.com.
